How this site measures up

This site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 at level AA. It partially conforms: most of it meets that standard, and the parts we know fall short are listed below.

What has been done

  • Every part of the site can be reached and used with a keyboard alone, and the focus outline is always visible.
  • Text and its background are contrasted to the level the standard asks for.
  • Headings run in order, so a screen reader can move through a page by its structure.
  • Images that carry meaning have a description; images that are decoration are hidden from screen readers rather than announced as nothing.
  • Anything that moves stops when a visitor has asked their device for less motion.
  • A reading panel in the corner of every page lets a visitor set this site the way they need it: invert colors, highlight links, bigger text, light spacing, play animations, hide images, dyslexia friendly, big cursor, tooltips, line height, text align, saturation. What they choose stays in their own browser and changes nothing for anybody else.

Where it still falls short

These are the things we know about. Please add anything else you find.

  • Some older images may carry a short description where a fuller one would serve better. These are improved as they are found.
  • Pages on other people’s sites that we link to are outside our control and may not meet this standard.
  • Some documents published before this statement was written may not be fully tagged for screen readers. Ask us and we will send you the content in another form.

How this was assessed

By going through the site by hand with a keyboard and a screen reader, alongside automated checks that catch what a person misses. This is our own assessment and has not been reviewed by anybody else.
